Intro to Yoga: Downward-facing dog

The final part of my three part series: INTRO TO YOGA. (check out part one and two here if you haven’t already!)

There are a few things I wish that I had been taught when I first started practicing yoga. Hence I made this series as I want to do everything I can to make it a little bit easier for you guys as beginners.

For me personally I had been practicing for a good few years before a teacher finally told me the true alignment I should be in for Downward-facing dog. Then when this happened my yoga practice completely transformed!

So it may seem silly to do a whole post on just one posture. However I really believe the down dog is the basis for everything! It can teach you so much about alignment and I wish I had known how to do the posture correctly when I first started practicing.

So here it is Adho Mukha Svanasana or “Downward facing dog”…

Part two of the series: INTRO TO YOGA. (check out part one here if you haven’t already)

It can be scary arriving anywhere for the first time and sometimes yoga can be intimidating. I know I was definitely unsure about many things during my first experience of yoga, so I thought I would make the first step a little bit easier…

Yoga can sometimes be serious and yoga can sometimes be A LOT of fun, there are no set “rules”, however some yoga class etiquette is great to know before a first class.

Here are some tips, cautions and hints for when you attend a yoga class, so you feel confident, prepared and comfortable.

YOGA: What are the bandhas?

Yoga can be confusing, especially when you are starting out. Back in the day when I was still a beginner I would attend class, practice for a full hour and a half, then leave and forget everything the teacher had said. I would get so into my meditation/asana practice that I was in my own space, going with the flow and listening for queues, but never truly retaining any of the information I was being told.

I then changed direction and began practicing a lot by myself. Self practice was amazing for me at that time and totally transformed my view of what yoga was. I didn’t even know what any of the postures were called, I just did my own thing and it really worked for me.

Then after a few years I felt like I needed a bit more guidance, energy and motivation. I began attending classes. This time around making the decision to become an active listener, to really show up to class and take in everything my teacher said. This was when I realised I had no idea what the teacher was saying!

There were so many foreign words flying around that it made me feel like I was starting from the very beginning…

Now as a teacher there are certain aspects of the practice which I constantly come back to throughout class. One of the most important and most frequently to come up is the bandhas. I know how intimidating all the different sanskrit names can be and me repeating “engage your bhandas” without you knowing what it is could lead to you to feeling unresolved at the end of class.

Therefore this post is going to be solely on the bandhas. What they are, what their purpose is and how they can improve your personal yoga practice. So when you next get on your mat you know exactly what your teacher is going on about…

London’s greatest workout = Project Awesome

Stumbling across Project Awesome a couple of months ago was one of the best discoveries I have made since living in London. My friend Sophie mentioned it to me and on a whim I thought I would give it ago, thinking it would probably be the first and last time I went. I try out a lot of different classes/fitness activities in London. A lot of them I check out and never return to and a few of them I enjoy and maybe go back to once or twice. The first Project Awesome I went to was on the 6th of july and I have pretty much been back every week since then…

Yes it is exercise and yes you have to wake up at 5:30 but it is so so worth it.

Practising yoga can have huge benefits for both the body and the mind.

Yoga strengthens and tones the body whilst leaving the mind feeling calmer and more present.

The ancient form of yoga can be practiced anywhere, there is no need for a gym, trainers or even a mat. Hence it is the perfect form of fitness for models who are traveling a lot.

A couple of weeks ago I worked with the amazing Elite model management team on a “How to work out like a model” video for Elite Model Look.
